“Welfare recipients are shown waiting at school bus stops with their children, helping them with their homework and preparing meals. All of the photographers spent a year with their subjects. That intimacy shines in their work.”
From an editorial in The Hartford Courant, 12/16/97, on "Families Receiving Welfare: Untold Stories," an exhibit of 40 photographs, including 20 by Christine Breslin.

Most of the documentary projects that I make are about social or political issues that I care about. These are topics the viewer might not normally encounter in their everyday lives. I believe in the power of photography to inform and educate people. Through photography, as well digital storytelling, I want to continue to make stories of issues and concerns in our society that people might not be aware of. Here are some of them:

  • “CONVERSATIONS” - Hotel Hartford Residents 1982 Printed in The Hartford Courant, NorthEast Magazine.
  • “FRENCHIE” - TEENAGE PREGNANCY 1983 A story on teenage pregnancy. Printed in The Hartford Advocate.
  • “FAMILIES RECIVING WELFARE: UNTOLD STORIES” 1995 Long term project to help change the negative media image of families on welfare. (This exhibit traveled all around the New England area including Boston and Hartford.)
  • CONNECTICUT HEART GALLERY – PROMOTING ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE 2003-Present. Sandy Hale and myself brought the HEART GALLERY concept to CT - With the creation of fine art photographic portraits made by volunteer professional photographers in CT, older children in need of foster care or adoption have been getting adopted for the past five years. Another result of the project was to raise awareness of need for adoption and foster care through out the state of CT working with the Department of Children and Familes with the State of CT.
  • “BREAKING DOWN THE GLASS WALL” A project with the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts to involve and invite the surrounding neighbors to be a part of the Academy through photography. This project has continued and is now called: UNITY THROUGH COMMUNITY.
  • “BEYOND THE VEIL” - A project to educate and help dispel myths about the hijab, the Muslim religion and our society in general. This exhibit was part of a grant through the Roberts Foundation in CT and at the current time, part of this project is traveling in a five year exhibit across the country in tandem with another exhibit called “The Veil: Visible & Invisible Spaces” check at the following website for the schedule: http://www.theveilbook.com
